Looking for hot air balloon rides near Santa Rosa? Here is the short answer. There is no launch in the middle of town, but our sunrise flights over Sonoma Valley and Carneros are about 22 miles and 33 minutes from downtown Santa Rosa. That is closer than most people expect, and the drive is easy at 5 a.m.
This guide covers the drive, when to leave, what a flight costs, and how to choose between operators if you are comparing. We fly from Sonoma Skypark, so we are one of the options. We will tell you plainly where we fit and where we don't.
How far is a balloon ride from Santa Rosa?
Santa Rosa to Sonoma is about 22 miles and roughly 33 minutes by car, according to Rome2Rio's driving estimate. The usual route is Highway 12 south through Kenwood and Glen Ellen into the town of Sonoma. Our check-in is at Sonoma Skypark, 21870 8th St E, Sonoma, CA 95476.
Compare that with the Bay Area. A guest coming from San Francisco is crossing the Golden Gate and driving about 45 minutes beyond it. A guest from Santa Rosa is already in the county. You can sleep in, have coffee at home, and still be at the field with time to spare.
Santa Rosa is also the one big Sonoma County city where you can fly in the morning and be back at your own table for a late breakfast. Our guide to rides across Marin, Sonoma and the North Bay shows how the drive times compare from other towns.
When to leave Santa Rosa
We fly at sunrise because the air is calmest then. Check-in is before sunrise, and the exact time is on your reservation. We also call or text you the evening before your flight to confirm it, so keep your phone on.
The drive is 33 minutes with no traffic. Add 10 to 15 minutes, because we ask guests to arrive that early for free parking and check-in. Then add a cushion for a foggy stretch of Highway 12 or a slow truck. Most Santa Rosa guests leave about an hour before their check-in time. That is a better plan than cutting it close.
Sunrise moves a lot over the year, so your alarm moves with it. These are Sonoma sunrise times for a few dates:
- Thursday, Oct. 29, 2026: 7:33 a.m.
- Monday, Nov. 2, 2026: 6:37 a.m., after the clocks fall back on Nov. 1
- Monday, Dec. 21, 2026: 7:23 a.m.
- Thursday, April 15, 2027: 6:34 a.m.
- Monday, June 21, 2027: 5:47 a.m.
Winter is the gentlest season for an early start, since the sun comes up after 7. Summer is the earliest alarm of the year. If you are choosing between seasons, our seasons guide goes month by month.

Book a FlightWhere the balloons actually fly
You check in at Sonoma Skypark, but that is not always where you launch. After a briefing with your pilot and crew, you may ride a shuttle for 5 to 20 minutes to the launch field that suits the wind that morning. Then you fly for 45 to 60 minutes, usually over the Carneros vineyards at the south end of the valley.
That flexibility is a good thing. A pilot who can choose among several fields has a better chance of flying on a marginal morning. If you want the full picture, read about how our launch spots work or visit our where we fly page.

Here is the local advantage. If you live in Santa Rosa, you are not tied to a weekend. A Monday or Thursday flight saves $20 per person. For a couple, that is $40 back. For a family of four, it is $80. Our packages page lays out each option side by side.
Two rules to check before you book. Every guest must be at least 8 years old and 57 inches tall. Our age and height guide has the details if you are bringing kids.
How to choose between operators
You may see other companies when you search for a balloon ride near Santa Rosa. Some operators are based in northern Sonoma County, around Windsor and Healdsburg, and others fly in Napa. If one of them is closer to your hotel or your house, that is a fair reason to pick them. Ask each company the same questions.
- Is the flight at sunrise? Morning air is calm. Be wary of a ride offered at midday.
- How many people share the basket? We keep our baskets roomy, and our post on basket size and space explains why that matters for photos and comfort.
- Is there a toast, and is it included? Ours is included with every flight.
- What happens if the weather cancels? A good operator tells you this before you pay. See our cancellation policy and our page on weather calls and FAA-certified pilots.
- Who is reviewing them? We have 2,300+ Google reviews at 5.0 stars. Read recent ones for any company you consider.
Make it a Santa Rosa morning
A flight takes 45 to 60 minutes, and the whole morning runs about three to four hours once you add check-in, the briefing, the landing and the toast. You will be done by mid-morning, which leaves the rest of the day open.
Two easy ideas for locals. Drive home through Glen Ellen or Kenwood and stop for breakfast before the tasting rooms open. Or book a flight as a gift for a visiting relative and let them stay the night in Santa Rosa. A gift certificate can be any amount, so you can cover one seat or the whole family.
Coming with a bigger group, like a reunion, a team outing or a birthday? We take up to 70 guests in a morning and can spread groups of 100 or more across consecutive sunrises. Start with our group balloon rides page and request a quote.
