Can Kids Fly? Age, Height, and Other Requirements for Sonoma Balloon Rides

Floating over Sonoma’s vineyards at sunrise is an experience families never forget, but we’re often asked: can kids join the adventure? We believe the best memories are made when everyone is prepared and safe, so let’s walk through exactly what’s required for children to soar with us at Sonoma Ballooning, plus how you can ensure your morning is stress free for all ages.

Age and Height: The Non-Negotiables

  • Minimum Age: 8 years old
  • Minimum Height: 57 inches (4 feet 9 inches)

These requirements are the result of years of experience and strict FAA safety standards. If a child does not meet both of these, unfortunately, they cannot fly. It’s not about keeping families out — it’s about ensuring every child can see over the basket, listen to safety instructions, and comfortably stand for the duration of the flight.

The Practical Reasoning: Why 8 Years and 57 Inches?

  • Visibility: Kids under 57 inches often can’t see over the basket edge, which is crucial not just for the view, but for comfort and safety.
  • Standing Endurance: Our flights are 45–60 minutes in the air, and the full experience lasts about three to four hours. Children need to be able to stand for at least an hour with no assistance.
  • Noise Sensitivity: The balloon’s burner is exhilarating, but younger kids sometimes find the roar surprising.

Most children under 8 or under 57 inches find it uncomfortable to stand the whole time. We cannot allow anyone to be lifted or held during the flight for safety.

Physical and Behavioral Requirements for All Guests

  • Stand unassisted for at least 60 minutes
  • Climb in and out of the basket without being picked up
  • Walk across uneven ground or tall grass at landing
  • Bend knees and hold on when the pilot instructs (especially for landing bumps)
  • Understand and follow spoken safety instructions promptly

If your child cannot check all these boxes yet, it’s better to wait another year or two. As a tip, a good at-home readiness test: see if your child can jump down from a stepstool unaided or stand on their feet for an hour at a local event.

Who Can’t Fly: Important Restrictions

  • Children under 8, or under 57 inches tall
  • Anyone who cannot stand, walk, or climb in/out without help
  • Pregnant guests (at any stage)
  • People using assistive devices (cane, wheelchair, medical boot, etc.)
  • Recent major surgery or chronic pain that limits movement
  • Only healthy, able-bodied guests can participate

Please check with your physician if you have medical questions, and call our team for specific scenarios before booking.

Are Pets or Service Animals Allowed?

  • No pets (including dogs, cats, and emotional support animals)
  • No service animals

Hot air balloons require a very specific weight and balance. Baskets are close quarters, and open flame is present, so animals aren’t permitted under any circumstances — even for kids. If you’re traveling with pets, make boarding plans in advance.

What a Family Flight Looks Like

A Sonoma Ballooning adventure is more than just the time in the sky. Here’s how a typical morning unfolds with children:

  • Arrival and Briefing: Arrive 10–15 minutes early at Sonoma Skypark for check-in and a safety talk. There’s free parking, and if you’re staying locally, you can arrange complimentary pickup with certain packages.
  • Transfer to Launch Site: Ride a van to our chosen daily launch location, based on wind for the safest views.
  • Inflation: Kids love this! Watch the envelope fill and the balloon stand upright.
  • Boarding: Children must climb in using footholds; crew can assist verbally but not physically lift anyone.
  • Flight: 45–60 minutes, soaring above vineyards, orchards, Carneros, and sometimes seeing as far as the San Francisco Bay on clear mornings.
  • Landing and Toast: Land in a safe open area. Return for a celebratory champagne toast (sparkling cider for kids) and stories with the pilot.

Is Your Child Actually Ready? A Candid Checklist

  • Is your child excited about heights, or at least not fearful?
  • Can they stand still and quiet for an hour without needing to sit, move constantly, or be held?
  • Do loud sounds (like the burner roar) upset them? If so, consider bringing in small foam earplugs.
  • Are they respectful of quickly following adult instructions?

Eight is our minimum, but the “sweet spot” for family flights, based on parent feedback, is often ages 9–12 for maximizing memory and comfort. Teens especially love ballooning for the unique photo ops and science of flight.

What to Wear and Bring for Kids

  • Closed-toed shoes (no sandals or heels)
  • Long pants (for protection during landing in grass)
  • Layers (Sonoma mornings start cool and warm up quickly)
  • Hat & Sunglasses (for morning sun and burner warmth)
  • Sunscreen (apply to faces and necks before arrival)
  • Optional: A small camera or phone with strap, soft earplugs

Food and drink aren’t allowed in the basket, but light snacks can be enjoyed before or after. Leave large bags and backpacks in your car or our office (see tips in our sunrise prep guide).

Booking Tips for Families

  • Choose the best package: Our join-in flights are the most popular for families, but consider a private VIP option if your group prefers a quieter, exclusive experience.
  • Plan for an early wake-up: Flights always launch at sunrise. Summer meetups can be as early as 5:30 a.m. (check your date in advance).
  • Confirm every requirement before booking: Measure your child’s height and discuss requirements as a family.
  • Arrive early for the experience: Early arrival eases stress, gives your child a chance to see balloon prep, and allows for that all-important bathroom break!

Why Sonoma Ballooning Is Family Friendly (And Different)

  • Closer to SF than other wine country balloon rides: Shorter drives mean less complaining and more fun for kids and parents alike. See our guide on why Sonoma is easiest for Bay Area families.
  • Multiple curated launch sites: We pick the best each morning, maximizing scenery and safety. This flexibility often means a smoother, more scenic flight for all ages.
  • Spacious, uncrowded baskets: Kids appreciate some elbow room and better views.
  • Storytelling pilots: Our FAA-certified pilots not only fly, they entertain with local history and fun facts, captivating young guests.
  • Celebratory atmosphere: We always end with a toast and stories, which everyone loves.
