Hot Air Balloon Gift Certificate: What to Know Before You Buy

A hot air balloon gift certificate is one of the few gifts that gets better the longer it sits in the envelope. Nobody has to return it. Nobody has to find a place for it on a shelf. The person you give it to gets a story instead of an object: a sunrise over Sonoma and Carneros vineyards, a soft landing in a field, and a champagne toast.

This is a plain guide to buying one from us. What you can spend, what each amount covers, who can and can't fly, and how to hand it over so it actually gets used. Prices below are our current 2026 rates.

How our hot air balloon gift certificate works

Our gift certificates can be bought in any amount. You pick the number. The person you give it to books their flight whenever they're ready. There's no fixed "package" you have to guess at, and no need to pick a date for them.

You buy it online through our gift card page. That's the whole process. If you'd rather talk it through first, call us at 707-819-9223 and we'll help you decide on an amount. For redemption details, ask us on the same call, so you hear it from a person and not a guess.

Every flight is a sunrise flight. It runs 45 to 60 minutes in the air, and the champagne toast is included. Check-in is at Sonoma Skypark, 21870 8th St E in Sonoma, about 45 minutes from the Golden Gate Bridge. Your recipient will get a confirmation call or text from us the evening before their flight.

What to spend: real prices for one, two or four

The easiest way to choose an amount is to work backward from who's flying. Here is what our join-in flights cost, per person and in total. Join-in means you share the basket with other guests.

• One person: $265 Monday through Thursday, $285 Friday through Sunday.
• A couple: $530 on a weekday, $570 on a weekend day.
• A family of four: $1,060 on a weekday, $1,140 on a weekend day.
• Private VIP flight for two: $1,500.
• Private VIP flight for three or four: $2,200.

Because you can choose any amount, you don't need to hit those numbers exactly. Some people cover one seat and let the recipient add a partner. Others cover a couple's weekend price so nobody has to do arithmetic. If you want the whole thing paid for with no math left over, use the weekend number. It comfortably covers a weekday flight too.

Who this gift is right for

A balloon gift certificate works best when you know the person likes mornings, views or a good story. It works poorly for someone who hates early alarms. Sunrise flights start early, and check-in is well before the sun comes up. Be honest with yourself about that.

Couples and anniversaries

Parents and grandparents

Families

Kids can fly, with two firm rules: guests must be at least 8 years old and 57 inches tall. Both. A tall 7-year-old can't fly, and neither can a short 9-year-old. Measure before you give the gift to a family. It saves a hard conversation later.

The person who has everything

This is where the gift earns its keep. The person with a full closet still doesn't have a sunrise over wine country on the calendar.

The timing question: when to buy, when to fly

You can buy a certificate any time, and the recipient decides when to fly. But the calendar matters for two reasons.

The weekday discount is real. Join-in flights cost $20 less per person Monday through Thursday than Friday through Sunday. For a couple that's $40. For four people it's $80. A recipient who can fly midweek keeps that money, and the mornings are quieter.

Some holiday dates fall in the cheaper window. In 2026, Christmas Day is a Friday. In 2027, Presidents' Day is Monday, February 15, and Martin Luther King Jr. Day is Monday, January 18. Federal holidays that land on a Monday fly at the weekday rate. If you're giving the certificate as a gift, tell the recipient that. Winter is also when the air is calmest and the hills are greenest. It's an underrated season to fly, and a good one to aim a gift at.

How to give it so it gets used

The number one way a gift certificate fails is that it gets tucked in a drawer. A few things help.

• Attach a season, not a date. "Use it before spring" is easier to act on than "someday."
• Offer to plan the rest. Suggest breakfast or a tasting after the flight. That way the morning becomes an outing, not a chore.
• Tell them about the weather. Pilots decide go or no-go the morning of the flight. If it isn't safe, we don't fly, and the flight gets rescheduled. Recipients who know that don't panic when a date moves. Our FAQ explains how it works.

Common mistakes when buying a balloon gift

We see the same few problems each year, so here they are up front.

• Forgetting the height rule. Kids under 57 inches can't fly, whatever their age. We cover this and eight other slip-ups in our list of first-timer mistakes.
• Buying too little for a group. If the recipient is bringing three friends, a single-seat amount leaves them short. Ask, or go bigger.
• Assuming it's a private flight. Join-in flights share a basket. If you want just the two of you, that's a VIP flight, and it costs more.
• Waiting for the perfect date. Book the certificate first. The date can come later.

Gifts for teams, clients and big groups

Certificates aren't only for individuals. If you're thanking a team or a client group, we fly up to 70 guests per morning, and groups of 100 or more can spread across consecutive sunrises.
