Christmas in Sonoma 2026 comes with a calendar accident worth knowing about. Christmas Day falls on a Friday this year. So does New Year's Day. Which means the two busiest holiday weeks of the year — the run-up to Christmas and the stretch between the holidays — both land entirely Monday through Thursday.

For a sunrise balloon ride, that is the difference between $285 a seat and $265 a seat on eight consecutive flying mornings. Nothing about the flight changes. Just the day of the week it happens to be.

Christmas Day itself (Friday the 25th), Saturday the 26th, Sunday the 27th and New Year's Day are all $285 mornings. December 2026 has 19 Monday-through-Thursday mornings in total — more than November's 17 or January's 16 — so there is plenty of room to pick a cheaper day without wrecking anyone's travel plans.

Sunrise is late, and that is the point

We fly at sunrise and only at sunrise, because the hour after first light is when the air is calmest. Your alarm is therefore set by the sun, not by us — and in late December the sun is in no hurry.

Sunrise in Sonoma runs 7:08 a.m. on December 1 and drifts to 7:26 a.m. by New Year's Eve. That is within a few minutes of the latest sunrises of the entire year. The solstice on December 21 gives you the shortest day — about nine and a half hours of daylight — but on the clock, a December wake-up is one of the gentlest we ask for.

The honest weather conversation

We are not going to pretend December is August. December is the wettest month of the year in Sonoma — roughly five inches of rain spread across about ten or eleven rainy days, with average highs near 55°F and lows around 41°F.

Read that the useful way, though: on a typical December, about two out of three mornings are dry. And the ones that are dry are often the best flying of the entire year.

Here is why. Winter storms scrub the haze out of the valley. In the clear slot between systems, the air is colder, heavier and more stable than anything summer produces, which means gentler winds at launch and a smoother drift. Visibility gets remarkable. The other winter gift is fog. Cold nights pool fog in the low ground around Carneros and Schellville, and a balloon climbs straight out of it into clean sunlight while the valley below stays under a white blanket. It is the single most photographed thing we do all winter. What Christmas in Sonoma actually feels like

December is our quietest season, and that is the real argument for coming. Tasting rooms that need a reservation three weeks out in September will often take you the same afternoon. Highway 12 is empty. The Plaza has lights on every tree and nobody fighting for a parking spot.

From the basket, the valley looks nothing like the postcard version. The vines are bare and pruned into dark geometry, the cover crop between the rows has come up green from the first rains, and the hills have turned that improbable winter green that only lasts a few months. Oaks hold their shape against all of it. Low sun, long shadows, no heat haze.

On the ground, the town leans into the season. The Lighting of the Sonoma Plaza and the Tractor Parade kick things off in November, and December brings the Holiday Spectacular and Santa on the Plaza. Organizers confirm dates as the season gets closer, and third-party event calendars in this county are slow to update — check sonomavalley.com or sonomacity.org directly rather than trusting a listing you found elsewhere.

Sonoma Skypark is about 45 minutes from the Golden Gate Bridge, which makes this an easy add-on to a holiday trip someone is already taking. You land, you toast with champagne, and you still have the entire day.

What to wear in a basket in December

More layers than you think, and a hat. It can be 38–45°F standing in a field at 7 a.m., and the grass will be wet. What works:

• A warm jacket over a fleece or sweater, so you can shed one in the air
• Long pants — jeans are fine — and closed-toe shoes you don't mind getting soaked with dew
• Gloves and a beanie for the ground portion, especially during inflation
• Nothing loose or dangling near the burner; scarves get tucked in

Giving a flight instead of booking one

A fair number of December bookings are not trips — they're presents. If you want to hand someone a balloon ride without guessing at their calendar or the weather, gift certificates come in any amount and let the recipient choose their own morning. That also quietly solves the December weather problem: they can pick a May sunrise if they'd rather.

If you want the surprise to be the flight itself, book a specific morning and plan around it — but build in a backup day, and tell them the night before rather than at 5 a.m.

Do you fly on Christmas Day?

How long is the whole thing?

You're in the air 45 to 60 minutes. Door to door, plan on three to four hours including check-in, inflation, the chase, and the champagne toast after landing.

Can kids come?

Our minimum is age 8 and 57 inches tall — both, not either. The basket walls come up near chest height on an adult, and a passenger who can't see comfortably over the edge doesn't enjoy the flight.

Can we book the whole balloon?

Yes. A private basket for two is $1,500; for three or four it's $2,200. Whole-balloon charters are priced at capacity × $285 plus a 10% crew gratuity — $2,508 for eight, $3,762 for twelve, $4,389 for fourteen, $5,016 for sixteen.
