Fall is the most popular season to get married in America, and it has been since 2015. Which means fall is also the most popular season to have an anniversary. If you are looking for Sonoma anniversary ideas over the next eight weeks, you are not alone — you are part of a very large crowd all trying to book the same Saturday night table. Here is how to get out ahead of it.

Why so many anniversaries land in September and October

The Knot's Real Weddings Study surveyed 10,474 U.S. couples who married in 2025. The five most popular wedding dates that year were all fall Saturdays: September 20, then October 4, 11, 18 and 25. Every one of those couples has a first anniversary coming up in the next two months.

It is not a one-year fluke, either. The Knot's top 2026 wedding dates include September 19, September 26 and October 10 — so next year's crop of first anniversaries will land in exactly the same window. Fall weddings beget fall anniversaries, year after year, and Sonoma is where a lot of Northern California couples come to mark them.

There is one useful wrinkle in the calendar this year. Because 2026 is not a leap year, every one of those popular 2025 Saturdays shifts forward a day. September 20, October 4, October 11, October 18 and October 25 all fall on a Sunday in 2026. Hold that thought — it matters for pricing in a minute.

Start with the morning, not the dinner

Almost every anniversary plan starts the same way: pick a restaurant, book 7:30, buy a card. The problem is that on a peak fall Saturday in Sonoma, so did everyone else. You end up eating at 8:45 in a full dining room, and the day itself was mostly driving and waiting.

The morning is the part nobody claims. A sunrise balloon flight puts the memorable hour of your anniversary at the very beginning of the day, when the valley is quiet and the light is doing something you cannot plan or buy. The alarm also gets kinder as the season goes on. Sunrise in Sonoma moves from about 6:39 a.m. on September 1 to 7:05 a.m. on September 30, and from 7:05 a.m. on October 1 to 7:35 a.m. by Halloween. A late-October anniversary is the most civilized sunrise flight of the year.

Which flight to book for an anniversary

There are really three choices, and the right one depends on whether you want the day to feel social or completely private.

• Join-in flight — $265 per person Monday–Thursday, $285 Friday–Sunday. A shared basket with other guests. Most couples pick this, and it is genuinely fun: you get a pilot narrating the valley, other people's stories, and a champagne toast with the whole group afterward.
• Private VIP for two — $1,500. Just the two of you, your pilot, and the basket. No small talk, no waiting for anyone else's photo. For a milestone anniversary — a tenth, a twenty-fifth — this is the one people book and do not regret.
• Private VIP for three or four — $2,200. Useful when the anniversary is a family thing, or when you want to bring the couple who introduced you.

The weekday trick worth knowing

Here is where that calendar wrinkle pays off. Join-in flights are $265 Monday through Thursday and $285 Friday through Sunday. If your anniversary falls on one of this year's Sunday dates — September 20, October 4, 11, 18 or 25 — flying on the actual day costs $285 a seat.

Shift to the Monday or Thursday on either side and you are at $265. For two people that is $40 back, and more importantly the field is quieter, the roads are empty, and the tasting rooms you visit afterward are not fighting a weekend crowd.

There is plenty of runway for it. September 2026 has 18 Monday-through-Thursday mornings, October has 17, and November has 17. Most couples we fly for an anniversary are already taking a day off to make the trip work — you may as well take the cheaper, calmer one.

What to do with the rest of the day

You will be back at Sonoma Skypark by mid-morning, which lands you at tasting-room opening time with a champagne toast already behind you. In September and October that timing is worth something specific: harvest.

• California Wine Month. September is designated as such by the California State Legislature, and most wineries in the county build something around it.
