Hot Air Balloon Ride While Pregnant: What to Know Before You Book

Can you take a hot air balloon ride while pregnant? At Sonoma Ballooning, the answer is no. Guests who are pregnant, or who may possibly be pregnant, are not able to fly with us. That is true at any stage.

We know that is not the answer you hoped for, especially if you booked months ago or you are planning a babymoon. So here is the full picture: what our policy says, why balloon flights are different from other travel, what happens to your booking, and what you can do instead.

Our policy on a hot air balloon ride while pregnant

Our FAQ page states it plainly. For the safety of mother and child, expecting mothers, or anyone who may possibly be pregnant, are not permitted to fly. We do not use a trimester cutoff. The rule applies from the start.

That wording matters in one more way. If you are trying to conceive, or you think you might be pregnant but have not tested yet, the policy covers you too. We would rather you skip one sunrise than wonder about it later.

Other operators draw the line in different places. Hot Air Balloon Australia, for example, accepts passengers under 13 weeks and does not accommodate them from 13 weeks on. Policies vary by company, and none of them replace advice from your own doctor. If you plan to fly anywhere, ask your doctor first and then read that operator’s terms before you book.

Why balloon flights are different

A balloon ride feels gentle, and for most guests it is. But the experience asks more of your body than the quiet drift suggests. Here is what a morning actually involves.

  • Climbing in and out of the basket. The basket has built-in step holes, but you climb in and out on your own.
  • Standing for the whole flight. There are no seats. Guests stand for the full 45 to 60 minutes.
  • Burner heat and noise. The burner roars right above your head, and you feel the warmth on your face.
  • A landing you cannot fully control. The pilot chooses a landing spot and does the work, but wind decides how soft or firm the touchdown is. Some mornings the basket settles. Some mornings it slides or tips.
  • Uneven ground afterward. After landing you walk across a field to meet the chase crew.

None of that is a problem on a normal day for a healthy guest. We just cannot predict the landing, and we cannot stop the flight midair. Those two facts are why we ask expecting mothers to wait. Our physical requirements guide covers the same list for every guest.

What happens to your booking if you are pregnant

If you booked before you knew, call us at 707-819-9223. We will go through your options with you, and you do not have to explain more than you want to.

Here is how our cancellation policy works, so you know where you stand.

  • Standard flights: cancel or reschedule at least 72 hours before your flight and you avoid being charged. There is no penalty before that point.
  • VIP flights: these are charged in full at booking. Your reservation locks in 30 days before the flight date. Cancel before 30 days and you are refunded in full. Cancel inside 30 days and the deposit is forfeited.

The takeaway is simple. Tell us early. The earlier we hear, the more choices you have, especially on a private flight with a 30-day window.

Can you still come along if you are expecting?

Yes, and many people do. Our policy says guests who cannot fly, including pregnant women, are invited to take part in the chase and the celebration, but not the flight itself.

That means you can still be part of the morning. You can watch the balloon inflate in the dark, follow it across the vineyards, and be there when your partner or family lands. Then you share the celebration.

If you would like to join the chase for a flight someone else is taking, call us before the day so we can plan around it. Check-in is at Sonoma Skypark, 21870 8th St E, Sonoma, CA 95476, and our pre-flight page covers arrival time and what to bring.

Better ways to celebrate a pregnancy in Sonoma

You do not have to give up the idea of a wine country trip. You only have to move the balloon to a different date. A few ideas that work well.

  • Book the flight for after the baby. Plan a sunrise morning for the two of you once the baby is here and you are ready.
  • Buy a gift certificate now. A gift certificate can be any amount. It is a promise to yourselves, and it is a thoughtful present for grandparents, siblings, or friends who can fly today.
  • Send the family up instead. A weekday join-in flight is $265 per person, Monday to Thursday. Friday to Sunday is $285. You stay on the ground with the chase crew and enjoy the morning from there.
  • Plan a ground day. Sonoma has plenty to offer without wine: the Plaza, farm stands, and long scenic drives. Our packages page shows the flight options if you want to build a trip around someone else flying.

If you want to surprise a partner with the news, remember that a flight is a lovely place to share it, just not one the expecting parent can enjoy in the air. A morning on the ground, followed by a champagne toast for the others and something sparkling and alcohol-free for you, can be just as memorable.

Other guests who cannot fly

Pregnancy is one of several situations where we ask guests to wait or watch. Our rules also cover age, height, and mobility. Guests must be at least 8 years old and 57 inches tall, able to stand unassisted for the whole flight, and able to climb in and out of the basket without help. Our post on age and height requirements goes through those in detail, and you can read how pilots make weather calls in how we keep you safe.

If you have a medical condition that could be aggravated in flight, talk to your physician before you book. When in doubt, call us and ask.

Questions we hear about ballooning and pregnancy

Can you go on a hot air balloon ride at 8 weeks pregnant?

Not with us. We do not set a week cutoff. Expecting mothers, or guests who may possibly be pregnant, are not permitted to fly at any stage. Other companies set their own rules, so always check each operator’s terms.

Is a hot air balloon ride safe in early pregnancy?

That is a question for your doctor, not for a balloon company. What we can say is that our policy is to ask expecting mothers to wait, for the safety of mother and child.

Will I get a refund if I find out I am pregnant after I booked?

Call us right away. Standard flights can be changed or canceled up to 72 hours before the flight without being charged. VIP flights are refunded in full if you cancel more than 30 days out.

Can I watch from the ground?

Yes. Guests who cannot fly are welcome to join the chase and the celebration. Let us know ahead of time.

Can my partner fly without me?

Yes. Your partner and family can fly while you ride along in the chase vehicle. Call us to set that up. For help with a booking, see our how to book guide.

The bottom line on a balloon ride while pregnant

A hot air balloon ride while pregnant is not something we offer, at any stage, and we would rather be clear about that than leave you guessing. Your plans do not have to end there. Join the chase, send the family up, or save the flight for the day you are ready.
