A hot air balloon bachelorette party is the one plan on the weekend list that the bride will still be talking about at the wedding. Eight friends, one basket, a champagne toast and the whole of Sonoma Valley turning gold below you. Then you're back on the ground in time for brunch, with the entire day still ahead.
This guide covers what it costs, which option fits which group, how to pick the morning, and how to build a weekend around a sunrise flight. We fly from Sonoma Skypark, about 45 minutes from the Golden Gate Bridge, so it works for a group coming up from the city or staying out in the valley.
Why a hot air balloon bachelorette party works
Most bachelorette weekends in wine country follow the same script: tastings, a long lunch, a rental house, repeat. Those are fine. A sunrise flight is different because it's quiet, it's shared, and nobody has to plan anything once they've checked in.
Three things make it a good fit for a group:
- It happens early. You fly at sunrise, so the afternoon and evening stay free for everything else on the itinerary.
- Everyone does the same thing at once. No splitting up, no waiting on the one friend who's still getting ready.
- The photos take care of themselves. Soft light, a colorful balloon and a basket full of people you love. Your phone does the rest.
Every flight lasts 45 to 60 minutes and ends with a champagne toast. Plan on the whole morning, since check-in, setup, the flight and the landing add up to about three to four hours. Our pre-flight page covers arrival time and what to bring.
Your three options, with real numbers
The right setup depends on how many of you there are and how much you want the basket to yourselves. Here's how it breaks down.
Join-in seats: the budget-friendly route
Join-in flights are $265 per person Monday through Thursday and $285 Friday through Sunday. You share the sky with other guests, and every seat gets the same view and the same toast. For a group of eight flying on a Saturday, that's $2,280 at list price.
We can seat up to 70 guests on a single morning. That makes join-in the easy answer for bigger parties, or for a group that wants to keep costs low. Fly Monday through Thursday and you save $20 a person.
Private VIP: for a small bridal party
If it's just the bride and a few close friends, a private VIP flight keeps the basket to your group alone. VIP for two is $1,500. VIP for three or four is $2,200, which works out to $550 each for a party of four. You can book the VIP for four online.
Whole-balloon charter: the full-group move
For eight to sixteen friends who want the entire balloon, a group charter is the one to price out. Our charters are the balloon's capacity times $285, plus 10% gratuity:
- 8 guests: $2,508
- 12 guests: $3,762
- 14 guests: $4,389
- 16 guests: $5,016
That's $313.50 a person in every case, and the gratuity is already in that number. Compare it to the eight join-in seats above, and the private basket costs $228 more for the group in total. For that, nobody else is in your photos and the balloon is yours from launch to landing.
The group rides page has the details, and you can request a group quote in a couple of minutes. The packages page shows every option side by side.

Book a FlightWhich morning to pick
Saturday is the obvious choice. It's also $285 a seat instead of $265, so it's worth knowing the tradeoffs.
Saturday sunrise is the classic. You arrive Friday, fly Saturday morning and have the whole afternoon and evening for the rest of the weekend. Weather can move a flight, so keep Sunday morning open as a backup.
A weekday flight is the cheaper play for join-in seats, and it suits a group that's already taking the Friday off. Charter pricing is the same any day, so there's no price reason to move a private balloon.
Sunrise changes a lot across the year, and so does your alarm. These are calculated sunrise times for Sonoma on sample Saturdays in 2027:
- April 17: 6:31 a.m.
- May 15: 5:59 a.m.
- June 12: 5:46 a.m.
- September 11: 6:48 a.m.
- October 9: 7:13 a.m.
You check in before sunrise, so a June flight means a very early start. Spring and fall give you a gentler alarm. If your group includes a few night owls, that's worth weighing when you pick the date.

A weekend plan built around the flight
Here's a simple shape for a Friday-to-Sunday weekend. Swap in your own favorites.
Friday: arrive and keep it easy
Check in, settle the house or hotel, and have a relaxed dinner. This is not the night for a late bar crawl. A 5 a.m. wake-up is a lot more pleasant when you've had a normal bedtime.
Saturday: fly, then brunch
Get to Sonoma Skypark at 21870 8th St E, Sonoma, CA 95476 at your check-in time. We'll call or text you the evening before to confirm. After the toast, head to brunch.
The Sonoma Plaza is a good bet. It's an eight-acre historic plaza with more than 25 tasting rooms plus restaurants and shops around it, according to Visit California. You can walk it all after your flight without a single designated driver conversation.
Saturday afternoon and evening: everything else
This is where the early flight pays off. You've done the headline activity before most people have finished breakfast. Spend the afternoon on tastings, a pool day or a long dinner. For ideas on filling the rest of the day, see our guide to Sonoma wine tours for groups.
Sunday: slow morning
Sleep in. You earned it.
Planning details that save headaches
- Everyone must meet the requirements. Guests need to be at least 8 years old and 57 inches tall. Check this for every friend, plus any kids who might join the party.
- Book early for Saturdays. A group needs more seats than a couple does, so reach out as soon as your date is set.
- Pick one person to be the point of contact. One name, one phone number, one booking. It keeps the group chat from turning into a logistics meeting.
- Dress in layers. It's cool at sunrise and warm by brunch. Closed-toe shoes and a layer you can take off work best.
- Tell us what you're celebrating. We like to know when we're flying a bride. Mention it when you call.
Our FAQ covers weather, safety and what to expect. If your group is bigger than sixteen, we can fly up to 70 guests on one morning, and groups of 100 or more can be spread across consecutive sunrises. Our guide to first-timer mistakes is worth a read before you lock in the date.
What if the wedding itself is in the sky?
Some couples skip the bachelorette entirely and say their vows in the basket. Weddings start at $2,200. If that sounds more like your plan, you can start a wedding booking here. The bridal party flying together is a pretty good rehearsal.
