Do you tip a hot air balloon pilot? Tips are never required, and they are always appreciated. If your flight was great, 10% to 20% of the ticket price is the range most operators suggest. Nobody at our field will ask you for anything.
That is the short answer. Here is the longer one, with real dollar amounts for our 2026 prices, so you can decide before you get there instead of doing math at 7 a.m. with a champagne glass in your hand.
Do you tip a hot air balloon pilot?
Yes, most people do when the flight goes well. It works like tipping a guide on a tour or a driver on a long trip. You are paying for a skilled person to do a job well, and a tip is how you say thank you.
It is not a rule. On our FAQ page we say it plainly: tips are never required and always appreciated on join-in and private flights. If you tip, you tip because you wanted to.
One more thing worth knowing. The pilot is the person you see, but not the only person who worked your flight. A ground crew helps set up the balloon in the dark, follows you in a chase vehicle, and packs the envelope after you land. When you think about a tip, think about the whole morning, not only the 45 to 60 minutes in the air.
How much to tip on a hot air balloon ride
Another Wine Country operator, Napa Valley Aloft, suggests 10% to 20% of the ride price, with 20% for a flight you loved. That matches what most travelers tell us. Here is what those percentages look like on our current prices.
- Join-in flight, Monday to Thursday ($265 per person): 10% is $26.50, 15% is about $40, 20% is $53.
- Join-in flight, Friday to Sunday ($285 per person): 10% is $28.50, 15% is about $43, 20% is $57.
- A couple on a weekday join-in ($530 total): 10% is $53, 15% is about $80, 20% is $106.
- Private VIP flight for two ($1,500): 10% is $150, 15% is $225, 20% is $300.
- Private VIP flight for three or four ($2,200): 10% is $220, 15% is $330, 20% is $440.
Those are guides, not targets. A tip of $20 from a solo traveler or $100 from a family is just as welcome as any figure above. Round numbers are fine. So is whatever your budget allows after a trip that already included flights, hotels, and wine.

Book a FlightWhen gratuity is already included
Group charters are different. When a group books a whole balloon, the flat rate is balloon capacity times $285, plus 10% gratuity. So an 8-passenger balloon is $2,508, a 12-passenger balloon is $3,762, a 14-passenger balloon is $4,389, and a 16-passenger balloon is $5,016. The gratuity is already in those numbers, so there is nothing extra to handle on the day.
If you are planning a bachelorette morning, a team outing, or a family reunion, our group balloon ride page breaks down each size and how to get a quote.
The same idea applies to the champagne toast. It is included in every flight. You do not tip for it and you do not pay for it separately.
What a good tip actually thanks
A balloon flight looks easy from the basket. It isn't. Here is some of what happens before you ever see the sky.
- The weather call. Pilots check wind, visibility, and the forecast before you wake up. A pilot who says no to a marginal morning is doing the most important part of the job. Our safety page explains how those calls get made.
- The launch field. Our pilots are FAA-certified. They pick a launch spot, read the air, and set up the balloon with a crew in the dark.
- The flight itself. A balloon can't be steered like a car. The pilot finds winds that move in different directions at different heights, then uses the burner to move up or down into the one that works.
- The landing. There is no runway. The pilot chooses a field, the chase crew meets you there, and the whole thing has to come together with landowner permission. We photographed one start to finish in where do hot air balloons land.
- The pack-up. Someone has to fold the whole envelope and load the basket onto a trailer. That is the crew's morning, too.

When to tip, and when not to
Tip when the flight was good and the team treated you well. Tip more if they did something extra, like making a nervous first-timer comfortable, helping with a proposal, or fitting in a special request.
You do not need to tip if the flight was cancelled for weather. A cancelled flight costs you nothing. You reschedule or get your money back, so there is nothing to tip on.
You also do not need to feel awkward about a small tip or none at all. The price you paid already covers the flight. A tip is a thank-you on top of it.
How to tip, and when
Most people tip at the end of the morning, after the toast, when they are walking back to their cars. That is when the whole experience is fresh. If you would like to tip in cash, bring it with you, since a quiet morning in a field is not the easiest place to go find an ATM. If you have a question about how to tip, just ask the team at check-in or at the end of the flight. They would rather you ask than guess.
If you are traveling with a group, one person can collect from everyone and hand it over in one go. That is simpler for you and simpler for us.
Not sure what to bring? Our pre-flight page covers the whole morning, from check-in to the drive home.
Other ways to say thank you
Money is not the only way to thank a balloon team. Reviews matter a great deal to a small family-owned company. We have more than 2,300 Google reviews and a 5.0 rating, and every one of them helps the next traveler decide.
A short, specific note works best. Tell people what you did and what you liked. "Our pilot let our eight-year-old watch the burner and explained why the balloon goes up" is far more useful than "great ride."
You can also just tell the pilot. Say thanks, say what you loved, and ask the question you were too shy to ask in the air. Pilots like talking about flying.
Questions we hear about tipping
Is tipping expected on a hot air balloon ride?
No. It is a personal choice. It is common, and it is appreciated, but it is never required.
How much should I tip for a balloon ride for two?
On a weekday join-in flight, a couple pays $530. A tip between $53 and $106 covers the 10% to 20% range. Many couples land somewhere in the middle.
Do I tip on a group charter?
A 10% gratuity is built into the charter rate, so no extra amount is needed.
Do I tip if I use a gift certificate?
If you are using a gift certificate, you can tip on the value of the flight the same way. It is up to you. Our gift certificate page explains how they work.
The bottom line on tipping a balloon pilot
Do you tip a hot air balloon pilot? You can, and many guests do, at 10% to 20% of the ride. You never have to. If you want to thank the team, a kind word and an honest review count for a lot.
